Beginner Sign & Play Class
Ages 6 to 18 months

The Signing Smart Beginner Play Class Series provides a playful environment where parents or caregivers and their hearing children learn ASL signs and research-proven Signing Smart Strategies while playing and interacting. Activities include gross motor play, large and small group interactions, reading, singing, and much more! The classes are great for families new to signing with their babies as well as for those who have already started. Come enjoy fun and engaging developmentally-based activities that foster intimacy and communication between babies and toddlers and their parents. More than simply teaching "routine" signs, the classes are full of both useful signs as well as ones that are most motivating to your child.

Activities are structured to facilitate both linguistic and cognitive development, building up children's conceptual understanding, memory, and vocabulary. You will learn the Signing Smart Start as well as how many and which signs to use throughout your signing journey. You will also learn Signing Smart Interaction Strategies, how to bring signs into your child's world, and how to recognize and respond to your child's early signs, making signing simple, fun, and successful. To top it off, you will learn relevant developmental information related to sign, word, cognitive, and emotional development-all while playing and interacting!

The $40 material fee includes: Treasure Chest: Toys & Signs DVD, ASL Video Glossary DVD and the Beginner Handbook.

Intermediate Sign & Play Class
Ages 12 mos to 3 years

The Signing Smart Intermediate Play Class Series is for families who have completed at least one session of the Beginner Series and are looking to expand and extend the benefits of Signing Smart. Building off the familiar structure of the Beginner Series, we integrate signs and Signing Smart strategies into gross motor play, large and small group activities, reading, storytelling, singing, and much more; however, the activities, interactions, and signs in the Intermediate Series are more advanced and are designed to take children to the "next level" with both signing and speaking.

The Intermediate Series provides a unique opportunity for families teaching their babies sign language to engage in vocabulary-rich activities that have been developed specifically to facilitate linguistic, emotional, and cognitive development in hearing toddlers. The Play Classes extend parents' signed vocabulary, and at the same time teach parents how to use ASL signs not only as a means of early communication, but also as a powerful vehicle to facilitate long-term learning. Through engaging and developmentally-stimulating activities, you will learn how to use ASL signs and Signing Smart Strategies to: facilitate your child's comprehension of abstract ideas; stimulate your child's memory skills, foster emotional understanding and regulation, encourage symbolic play, enhance overall vocabulary and sentence use (signed and spoken), and advance your child's pre-literacy abilities through strategic sign use while reading, rhyming, and storytelling.

The $40 material fee includes: Treasure Chest 2: Signs, Songs and Rhymes 2 Disc Set DVD and the Intermediate Handbook.
